About the unit

This unit delivers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake work using a side by side utility vehicle used for general transport, carrying loads, towing small trailers and mustering stock.

The unit includes the following:

  • Prepare side by side utility vehicle for use.

  • Confirm the activity to be undertaken with supervisor, including identifying safe working areas, potential hazards and implementation of safe working procedures.

  • Conduct safety pre operational checks on the vehicle and report faults or malfunctions for repair.

  • Use and maintain personal protective equipment.

  • Attach equipment and loads that do not exceed the weight limitations or change the dynamic stability of the vehicle.

  • Secure loads and ensure weight does not exceed limits.

  • Operate side by side utility vehicle and equipment in a safe, efficient and controlled manner.

  • Operate side by side utility vehicles in accordance with task requirements, conditions and manufacturers operating guidelines.

  • Assess and minimise potential risks to self, others and the environment.

  • Ensure that the vehicles seat belts and other safety features are functional and used.

  • Identify and account for environmental implications associated with machinery operation.

  • Conduct shut-down procedures according to manufacturer's specifications and enterprise requirements.

  • Perform routine operational servicing and minor maintenance.

  • Identify and report malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage.

  • Clean, secure and store machinery.

  • Ensure biosecurity procedures are followed where required.

  • Maintain machinery use records for servicing purposes.

  • Identify hazards and risks associated with side by side utility vehicle use.
